REVIEW

Over the years there have been many role playing games(RPG), and one particular company has made many of what people consider the "greatest games of all time."
Squaresoft. It is mostly known for its Final Fantasy series which is now moving into the eleventh installment. With all of this fuss about Final Fantasy people tend to overlook what I consider the greatest RPG of all time. Chrono Trigger has been my favorite game since I first played it on the Super Nintendo. Now that the Playstation remake has come out, interest in the title has been rekindled.

Story

The game starts out in the town of Gaurdia in the year 1000 AD. The new millenium has started and a giant celebration is taking place. A young man, named Crono, sets out for a day at the millenium fair. His friend Lucca convinces him to try her new teleportation invention, but things go wrong, and Crono finds himself being hurled through time. What starts out as the typical time travel storyline, changes drastically as the game progresses.

When it's all said and done, Chrono Trigger's storyline is what first got me hooked to the game. In my opinion, it is one of the greatest storylines of any RPG.

Character Developement

There are seven main characters in this game, and every one of them has a well developed back ground and interesting story. Well, except for Crono, who's story developes as you go along.

Graphics

When this game was released, back in 1995, it had the best graphics of any Super NES rpg. Even outclassing the former title holder: Final Fantasy 3(six in Japan.)
The world maps and dungeons are extremelly detailed, and the graphics always add to the atmosphere of whatever happens to be taking place in the game. The characters are detailed as well, and were created by Akira Toriyama, of Dragon Ball fame.

Score: 10/10

Music

Another one of Chrono Triggers greatest aspects is the music. The tunes greatlly contribute to the atmosphere of the game, and leave you forever humming them. In my opinion, this is the greatest RPG soundtrack of all time. Some may disagree with me on that one.

Gameplay

Another one of Squaresoft's active time battle RPGs. Chrono Trigger's battle system has impressive mutiple character combos added to it to make it better than most RPG fighting systems. I think the gameplay would have been better if more focus was put into a complex skill developement system. Like the Esper system of FF 3, or the job sytem of FF tactics. This would have added more depth to an already impressive game. Don't get me wrong though, the battle system is still good, just not the best.

Score: 9/10

Replay:

This is another one of Chrono Triggers awesome features. Most RPGs are played through once in about 60 hours, and then abandoned ,until years down the road when/if the owner gets really bored. Chrono Trigger however has 12+ endings that keep you coming back again and again. Although the game is somewhat shorter than most RPGs, just playing strait through, all of the endings and side-quests make it much, much longer. Probablly my most played game.

Overall  the storyline, music, character developement, and massive replay value all combined makes Chrono Trigger my favorite RPG. Some RPGs may have better graphics or slightly better battles systems, but I've yet to see an RPG that has beaten Chrono Trigger in all areas. Hopefully one day, a company will make an RPG that I like more than this one. I guess I'll just have to try and play then all then; I never know when that game will come along...
